Patricia’s faith and compassion, combined with a love of science and an interest in women’s issues, resulted in her becoming a nurse and midwife. Born in Bong Mines, Bong County, Liberia, Patricia is one of 8 children; she has 5 brothers and 2 sisters. As a child, she enjoyed playing kickball, which she continues to play as an adult.
While in high school, Patricia loved science. It was during the 9th grade that her interest was piqued in violence against women. When her English teacher asked the students to select a topic to present to the class, Patricia chose this as her topic. After she graduated from high school, she noticed that the demand for midwives in her community and county could not be met. This prompted her to pursue a career in healthcare, specializing in midwifery, hoping to make an impact in the health sector.
Patricia always had a dream to become a midwife. She prayed for success in school in order to pursue her dream. The most meaningful experience for her as a midwife is to render services to pregnant women and have a good outcome. She particularly likes aiding them during the difficulties of pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
Patricia believes in giving back to society. She wants to make a difference in people’s lives. She is certainly making a difference in Todee District in Montserrado County. She reports that House of Hope has been treating women with high-risk pregnancies and gives credit to God for the impact her services have had on deliveries, whether through natural childbirth or by C-Section.
One of the challenges that she faces in her current position, is that the patients like the service they receive at House of Hope so much, they don’t want to be transferred to another facility to give birth! They appreciate the kindness they receive. However, because House of Hope is only a waiting home, the patients are counseled to go to a clinic or hospital for safe delivery.
For Patricia, nursing is a calling. Although passionate about nursing, she has many other interests. She likes to cook, primarily African dishes, but she has tried a few Western and European recipes as well. She loves listening to music, especially Gospel music. She is a Christian and attends church regularly because of her belief in Christ and God Almighty. In addition to playing kickball, she enjoys watching sports as well.
She feels happy and blessed to be a part of the Dignity:Liberia family. We feel the same.
