Hawa Kerkula - Post-Rehab

It’s been ten months since we interviewed Hawa Kerkula at the Phebe Rehab Center.  At that time, she told us she had learned three trades.  Before setting up a business, she hoped to complete high school, as she only needed to complete the 12th grade.   I recently followed up with her to learn what she has done since leaving the Rehab Center.

When she left the Rehab Center, her relatives were happy to see her healthy and able to be self-sufficient.  She completed her senior year of high school at the Firestone Liberia Senior High School where her favorite subject was literature.  She has taken the national exam and will graduate on August 11!  She would like to attend nursing school or college.

Hawa has remained friends with other survivors that she knew at Rehab.  They talk frequently, recalling their time at the Rehab Center.  She also has stayed in touch with the chief of security and frequently talks with “Ma Sao.”
She loves listening to Gospel music.  Currently in her free time, she helps her sister in her business.  Hawa will soon be selling her own crafts in the community.  She learned how to crochet and how to embroider while at the Rehab Center.  She has shared pictures of some of her handiwork which are included in this post.
I asked her what she would like people to know about her.  She wants you to know that she is somebody who is willing to learn.  She is a respectful person and humble person.  She would like for people to know how talented she is when it comes to embroidery and crochet work.

I am proud of Hawa and thrilled with how well she is doing!  I think she will do well in her postsecondary education.  I have a feeling she will go far in life.
